There are no upper age limits. The first cohort of the program comprised graduates from Cody High School and Randolph High School, both in Detroit. The majority of the students entered the program after working at DTE during the summer of 2017 in the Summer Youth Program, which provides hands-on experience in skilled trades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Another cohort of students is scheduled to begin later in 2018 and is open to all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">This program is a \u201cstackable credential\u201d pre-apprenticeship program focused on teaching the core competencies for skilled trades. Students can obtain single or multiple certifications or degrees, thus \u201cstacking\u201d their credentials if they choose. This allows them to be versatile and pursue what the market demands.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Why choose an energy career?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">The benefits to students are significant:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">The program is aligned with <span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">registered apprenticeship programs<\/span>. Students gain skills to obtain entry-level employment or an apprenticeship in the energy industry.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Students can explore <span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">different career paths<\/span> within the energy industry while earning a usable credential.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Students have the flexibility to <span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">transfer to different job training roles<\/span> in the program.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Students can decide on a career path based on their <span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">interest and ability to pass qualification requirements <\/span>prior to taking classes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Students gain an understanding of the physical aspects of each job role through <span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">hands-on labs and career exploration<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Students gain an <span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">overview of job discipline and qualification requirements<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Program instructors are <span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">industry subject matter experts<\/span> and recent industry retirees, who understand the field from a hands-on perspective and years of on-the-job experience.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">High-paying jobs and flexible career paths<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">According to Deborah Majeski, manager of the Center of Excellence and HR Workforce Development at DTE Energy, Michigan\u2019s energy industry employs nearly 99,000 people. The Michigan Workforce Development Agency (MDEA) estimates the Energy Cluster to grow by 9 percent through 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-89\" src=\"http:\/\/hfcc.mycareerfocus.org\/spring-2018-volume-9-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/04\/iStock-909317160-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hfcc.mycareerfocus.org\/spring-2018-volume-9-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/04\/iStock-909317160-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hfcc.mycareerfocus.org\/spring-2018-volume-9-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/04\/iStock-909317160-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hfcc.mycareerfocus.org\/spring-2018-volume-9-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/04\/iStock-909317160-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/hfcc.mycareerfocus.org\/spring-2018-volume-9-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/04\/iStock-909317160.jpg 1254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>A vibrant Michigan needs good jobs<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">\u201cWe know the key to a strong and vibrant Michigan is good jobs,\u201d said Majeski. \u201cAnd quality education is essential to a good job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">\u201cHFC and DTE are not only preparing these students to work in the energy industry; we are preparing them to also become <em>leaders<\/em> in the energy industry,\u201d said Rebecca Michalski, HFC Project Manager of the DTE Foundation Grant. \u201cThis field has plenty of opportunity for employment and advancement, especially since a large percentage of the workers are expected to retire within the next 5-10 years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">The next generation starts now<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Vernor Jacobs, 19, of Detroit, is one of the students enrolled in the program. Right now, he\u2019s undecided on what specialty in the energy field he will pursue. Still, he has learned a lot from the classes he\u2019s taken, which have changed his perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">\u201cI notice different cements, different drywall, and those sorts of things I didn\u2019t notice before,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m learning things I never knew. There are new ideas and more knowledge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Both Majeski and Michalski see this program as essential in developing and educating the next generation of employees to work in the energy industry, not just for one company. Majeski emphasized that this is something much bigger than working for DTE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">\u201cThis is part of our company\u2019s passionate focus to be a force of growth and a force for good in the communities where we live and serve,\u201d she said. \u201cWe see ourselves and the private sector playing an essential role in pushing Michigan forward. During this time, apprentices gain the knowledge and hands-on experience to complete job-related tasks. Apprenticeships in the energy trades are paid positions that usually last 2-5 years. In the end, the apprentice will earn industry recognized credentials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">A <span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">journeyman<\/span> has successfully completed the official apprenticeship qualification in the trade. A journeyman is licensed and is considered competent and authorized to work in the field as a fully qualified tradesman.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Job roles and salary expectations<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\"><em>NOTE: The listed salaries are estimated salary ranges based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
