HFC alumnus Timothy Pollack initially wanted to teach history. Instead, he\u2019s living it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShakespeare lets me live history. His plays are more than 400 years old. I get to wear period clothing, speak the language of the day, and get into sword fights. Theater is where it is!\u201d said Pollack.<\/span><\/p>\n

The classically trained Shakespearean actor, a Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) alumnus,\u00a0recently played the titular character in a professional production of\u00a0Hamlet<\/em> in Ann Arbor, which featured several HFC alumni and was directed by HFC adjunct theater professor Gerard Dzuiblinski.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHamlet<\/em> is my favorite Shakespearean play,\u201d said Pollack. \u201cThere\u2019s something about this play and this character… it\u2019s hard to put it into words.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This above all: To thine own self be true<\/span><\/h4>\n

Pollack admitted he had reservations about the role, given the caliber of actors who’ve played Hamlet and the character’s many nuances and layers.<\/span><\/p>\n

He decided to make Hamlet his own, approaching scenes in different ways. In one take, he would portray Hamlet as angry; in another, as insane.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want to make it a Hamlet I\u2019ve seen before,\u201d said Pollack. \u201cI wanted to find what I thought fit best for the character.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A wonderful training ground<\/span><\/h4>\n

Pollack graduated in 2010 from Cabrini High School in Allen Park and in 2013 from HFC with his associate degree in theater.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHFC was a wonderful training ground,\u201d said Pollack.\u201cThe people there were very serious about theater.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At HFC, Pollack played Romeo in\u00a0Romeo and Juliet<\/em>\u00a0 and Vince in Grease<\/em>.\u00a0Alongside fellow HFC alum Samantha York, Pollack co-directed 2013’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Ruined<\/em>. The Kennedy Center\u2019s American College Theatre Festival recognized Pollack, York, and Dzuiblinski for their work on Ruined<\/em>. All three won a Certificate of Merit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pollack then auditioned for the RCS. \u201cI was thrilled beyond words when they accepted me,\u201d he said. \u201cI moved to Glasgow and absolutely loved it. I want to move back there as soon as possible -\u2013 it\u2019s such a wonderful city.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Royal Conservatoire of Scotland<\/span><\/h4>\n

At RCS, Pollack learned you don\u2019t get to choose your schedule. First thing in the morning, he attended body conditioning. \u201cIt whipped us into shape,\u201d said Pollack. \u201cTheater is exhausting, so we had to build up our endurance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

There were rehearsals every evening. Pollack appeared in Frankie and Johnny<\/em>, As You Like It<\/em>, and others. He also directed the play BC<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pollack earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in acting from RCS in 2016. Fellow RCS alumnus David Tennant, an Emmy winner who also played Hamlet, was the commencement speaker. Pollack had the opportunity to meet Tennant.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe was very generous with his time and very down to earth,\u201d he said. \u201cI had come across his production of Hamlet<\/em> while I was at HFC. He was the reason I chose to be an actor. Between his talent and the encouraging words of (Dzuiblinski) and (adjunct theater instructor) Chris Bremer, I decided that theater was how I wanted to live the rest of my life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
